We Are Not Like Them

Meet Jen and Riley as they happen to be the best of friends since childhood. The two have been like sisters from the first day when they met in kindergarten. Throughout their educational career, they lived together and the bond of friendship never got weak. Then their ways were separated when Jen got married and settle elsewhere with her husband. Riley on the other hand had a dream of becoming a journalist so she started working for her passion.

After years of hard work, Riley finally became the first black journalist in the town. Now she was looking for a top story that could attest to her authority in the profession. During these days, Jen also comes and settles in her hometown because her husband is posted as a police officer in the town. After years of struggle, Jen was finally pregnant and she was hoping to see her child in her hands soon.

At this point in time, something happens that disrupts everything. Jen’s husband shoots a black teenager who was actually unarmed. The thing spreads like a wildfire in the locality and everyone wants justice for the teenager. Jen’s life shattered within minutes and she asks for help from Riley who actually stands with the black community in this case.

Christine Pride and Jo Piazza are quite strong in depicting an effective storyline. Here the narrators Marin Ireland, Kevin R. Free, and Shayna Small have narrated marvelously too just as they did in This Time Tomorrow and The Winners. This is the story of love, culture, and friendship which is tested at the end of the novel.
