The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois

Du Bois had a different view about African Americans which can be seen in the books which were written by the author. The word “Double Consciousness” prevailed a lot at the time when it was used by the author for the first time. Honoree Fanonne Jeffers has used the same word here to start the tale of Ailey who happens to be a member of a black family. From her childhood, the girl faced many problems in the society in which she was living.

She was given different names and was bullied a lot at the school level. Her grandmother’s name was Pearl and she was one of those black people who faced the torture of slavery on her body. The family used to live in Georgia at the time of slavery and it was the most hard hit area in America by the curse of slavery. Though the family migrated from that place and finally earned its freedom as well the stories of the past were never erased.

Whenever Ailey used to go to his mother in the city she had a habit of listening to different stories linked to her family. It was the stories linked to her family that made her able to understand the reality of life before her birth.

Karen Chilton and Prentice Onayemi are famous for the narration of The Passage and The Two Lives of Sara so they dealt with this book quite easily. It was a fine performance by both narrators and the chemistry between them is amazing here. At no spot, we can detect that their voices overlapped because of any reason.
