At the end of WW II, Cyril combined luck with a canny investment for starting a huge real estate empire. It was an endeavor that propelled his entire family from extreme poverty to mammoth wealth. His first business deal was to buy the Dutch House. It was a beautiful estate situated in the suburbs, just next to Philadelphia. This business deal was meant to be a huge surprise for his wife. The same house very soon then set in motion the undoing of all those whom he loved the most.

The story here is told by Danny, who was the son of Cyril. Danny along with Maeve and his older sister were exiled from the Dutch House. It was the place where they were brought up by their stepmother. Those wealthy siblings at one time were thrown back into poverty from which their parents managed to escape. The siblings had an unshakeable bond between them which helped them to survive in difficult times and then also helped a lot in thwarting their futures.
