This is the first installment of the series started by Kel Kade. In the kingdom of Ashai, there used to be a fortress in which a warrior was being trained for a special reason. The name of the warrior is Rezkin and he shows keenness in his training. One thing which he does not know yet is the purpose of his training. Still, he does not ask any kind of questions from his trainers because he thinks that everything will be told when the time is right.
Out of nowhere, the fortress gets attacked one day and Rezkin is the only one who is alive at the end of the combat. Now, this young warrior does not know what to do because he is not sure about his purpose of life. So he goes towards the kingdom to know why he was being trained.
He gets more surprised when he realizes that everyone he knew was already dead. So he started making new friends on the way which was the only option left for him. Then his new friends also started facing different deadly attacks. Nick Podehl has narrated other books of the type Dragons and Demons and Mage of No Renown thus it was quite easy for him to narrate the character of Rezkin.
Every step which the warrior takes in the novel is towards a new realization and he understands that the entire kingdom is under a threat and he has to save everyone. Failing is not an option because he has lost those whom he loved in the past and he is not going to allow the enemies to snatch his dear ones from him again.
