City of Girls

City of Girls is a fictional novel by Elizabeth Gilbert. She is a journalist, writer, and novelist from the USA. Big Magic is a considerable novel of the author and so is her Eat, Pray, Love where the latter is a memoir and the most sold book of the author.

Blair Brown did the narration of City of Girls. This performance is rated just above average and is acceptable.

The story of this book is set in the year 1940. It started with the character of Vivian Morris who was a 19 years old girl. She was expelled from Vassar College due to her lackluster performance in her freshman year. She was then sent to Manhattan by her affluent parents. She was supposed to live there with Aunt Peg. She was the owner of a theater there which was known as the Lily Playhouse.

Vivian, there was introduced to the cosmos of charismatic and unconventional characters. Those included a grand-dame actress, a charming male actor, fun-loving showgirls, a no-nonsense stage organizer, and an exceptional, lady-killer writer. But the time when Vivian made a personal mistake that led to a professional scandal then her new world all of a sudden was flipped upside down. Eventually, the incident led her to a completely new understanding of how things work and the type of life she always craved for. Moreover, it also helped her with the understanding of the freedom that it would take to pursue it along with taking her close to the love of her life…

The book has terrific and delightful characters with amazing one-liners. The author was able to create a convincing wartime atmosphere along with nice descriptions and detailing of it.
