Here they are together and the band together means that they are in for a lot. Three women appear on the scene in this novel. All three of them are facing some kind of problems in their life and they are going to solve those problems because the time of running away is now over.
Gertrude has four children to feed and her husband is nowhere to be found which means that she has to arrange for the bread and butter of her family. In these circumstances, it is Retta who comes to her and tries to help her. Retta is the one who sued to serve as a slave once and now she is free but society is still not ready to accept in her so many roles.
Then there is a third woman named Annie who starts a business and involves different women in the sewing job. Gertrude also starts working there with Annie and life starts to get better. Annie does not discuss her own problems but she too had been facing a lot of problems at her home which she has been trying to hide for a very long time.
Thus Deb Spera has described women who are facing terrible situations in their life and they think that they are the only ones who can help each other because they understand the problems each other better than anyone else. They have faced many problems in the past but they are just tired of running away now.
