Remember that this is a trilogy and this is not the first part of the series so those who are not aware of the story in advance will suffer a little for one or two chapters. After those chapters, the new beginners will be able to get full information about the five families that are present in the series.
One of the families is American and then there are German, Russian, English, and Welsh family who show us the effects of the World War on them. The war years were the era of change and everything was changing around the families that used to believe in culture and traditions. Ken Follett went on with this theme in Fall of Giants and he has tried to carry on with it in this second part narrated by none other than John Lee.
Carla is the first one on the scene and she is from a mixed race as one of her parents is German and the other one is English. Then there is an English man named Lloyd Williams who has demons of his own to fight with. The role of Woody and Chuck i.e the two Americans is different because they are not forced by circumstances to take different paths. They decide to select their paths on their own. The last one is Daisy who is looking for something special in life.
These characters from different parts of the world come together in this story which moves on several levels at the same time. Love, relations, and traditions all go side by side in the novel and there is no break for any of these things.
