Sir Ransom Barton had done a great service for the land and now after all that he decides to rest a while and get settled in life. Claire happens to be the heiress he loves and his future is linked to her alone. After the pilgrimage, he decides to go to her directly so that they can live happily ever after but his path is altered by the Elder King who wants the help of this knight in more than one way. The king gives Ransom a high seat in the palace which makes him a powerful man in the realm.
Though Ransom was reluctant to take the charge of his new position he was unable to refuse such a proposal as well. Perhaps the king knew what this knight wanted from the inside. Jeff Wheeler has written detailed chapters related to these scenes. After a while, Ransom realizes that the king has enemies not only outside the palace but also on the inside. The three reaming sons of the king want to become the heir to the throne for which they can actually kill each other and anyone who stands in their way.
After becoming the heir they can get rid of the king too. So along with the war on the border, Ransom has to take care of this strange war as well. Kate Rudd has narrated other parts of the series like Fate’s Ransom and Lady’s Ransom too. All these parts tell us about the struggle of a man who has nothing to lose apparently but the things which he wants to achieve are really hard to get.
