Death is coming to the world in different forms in the story. Lucius Alexander creates the OASIS cities that have all the luxuries of life in them. Those who want to enter this luxurious life must accept the amendments made to the religion by the governing body of the OASIS. Many people thought that it was not a very big deal so they just entered the domain and accepted whatever was asked of them. Their life was pleasant and on the outside, there was nothing left for the people of the world except dust.
Those who were strong believers thought that they would be able to withstand this havoc until the deadly virus started attacking the people at a rapid pace. Only the people living at the OASIS were allowed to get the vaccine while the rest could just see each other dying in front of their eyes. It was a terrible sight and the faith of many people crumbled see this situation.
The threat of nuclear war was also looming in the head of the people and they thought that they are going to die in one way or the other. Mark Goodwin has described terrible circumstances for the human race in this story. It is also the test of belief for many while for others it is an opportunity to dictate terms.
