The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane Audiobook
Lisa See has talked about different Chinese societies in her different novels. Here the author introduces us to the society that calls itself the Akha. The people of this society live their primitive life and they are quite satisfied with it. The main source of earning for the people is the farming of tea. For about three generations, the people of the land are doing the same thing and they haven’t thought about exporting anything.
Then a jeep comes to the village and a man comes out of it who is in need of the same kind of tea that was being farmed by the villagers. The people of the town were rarely educated and one of them was Li-yan who got hired as the official narrator for the foreigners. The girl was different as compared to the people of her village.
She broke the rules and gave birth to a baby girl without the wedding lock. She knew that no one in the village will accept her daughter so she took her to the other village and abandoned her there. The baby girl was adopted by an American family soon after she was found. Thus the mother and daughter start living a different life but the daughter wanted to know about her origin. Finally, it is the farming of tea that brings the two women closer to one another once again.
Different cultures and people were described in Shanghai Girls by the author and she charmed the fans with the same kind of scenery in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan too. These books tell us about the cultural boundaries which used to make the life of an individual quite tough if he ever wanted to free himself.
