EMP is described as the technology in the novel which brought the entire world to its knees after just a single click. The world of today depends mostly on technology that runs on electric power. If the electric power vanishes then all the things related to it would become useless all of a sudden and man would be thrown back into the stone ages. Sean Liscom has described such a thing in the novel as the author brings out the animal hidden in the human body.
We live a sophisticated life and don’t harm each other because there is law and order which is being maintained with the help of appliances that are run on electricity. The use of EMP destroyed everything in a single second after which the law and order just vanished in thin air. Now everyone is looking for a way to survive and it does not matter whether one has to snatch something from the other.
Jason Sterling was living a good life before this happening and when everything went down, he changed his mode of life as well. Christopher Lane changes the style of narration too after the EMP effect to show the change that was brought in the people.

Jason does not remain an ordinary man because the world around him changes and he is forced to change in order to survive. Later he not only learns the way to survive but he also starts dominating the situation completely.
