When the family starts life in Congo it was just the same appearance but soon they realized that things started changing.

Nothing was the same in Congo, from the vegetables to the political system. Nathan’s family thought that they had made a big mistake but they had reached a point where they were not able to do anything about it. So they decided to stay and mend their life by remaining in Congo. Their passion and energy are described by the narrator Dean Robertson.

For three decades the family kept on the struggle and it didn’t leave its ground when the political unrest started after the murder of the first prime minister. They saw everything with their own eyes and kept on working with hope. The Bean Trees and other stories like Pigs in Heaven can be kept parallel to this novel in the mind. These stories are about struggles that make families and individuals strong. Staying firm and not leaving the post is the right way to live a life.
