This is not the first time when we see Peter Grant standing in the middle of big trouble which a normal mind cannot comprehend. This is not unusual for Peter after all he is the last wizard that England has and dealing with supernatural things is his daily business. So many times he has seen dark forces coming to snatch the life and property of the ordinary humans whom he protects.
Every time he has succeeded in completing the job that is assigned to him. The evil that has been unleashed on the world this time is pretty pre-historic type. It has something to do with Tyburn Gallows. The place has an ancient history but people in the modern world just don’t believe in those old legends.
When the Mayfair mansions get haunted again because of an evil force that has returned to the land it is up to Peter to get to the root of all this. For this, he has to go back in history page by page, and only then he would be able to learn the purpose of this return.
Ben Aaronovitch gives abruptness to the story and this is the key to success for A Rare Book of Cunning Device and Tales from the Folly. The story catches us suddenly by surprise and we don’t want to get rid of it after that. Every moment is cherished by the listeners in the voice of Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. The place called the Hanging Tree scares the weak minds very much so if you are scared of the dark then just don’t pick this book for your free time at night.
