Steven Erikson has talked about Malazan a lot previously and the author comes with another book with a huge stock of wars in it. Many races have been fighting together for ages and stopping them is not a good idea because whoever will try to stop them will get crushed. Some gods and devils are taking part in this war and no one can run away even if he wants to. Crush or get crushed is the only way the war will end and it seems the end is quite near.
The Seven Cities Rebellion was a major threat to the ruling class but now things are in the hands of the rulers because the rebels have been crushed and their number is squeezed. The city of Y’Ghatan is the last resort of the rebels and if it goes out of their hands then there will be not rebels that would threaten the throne afterward.
The author also talks about the past in the novel and tells the listeners about the champions of the past such as Dassem Ultor. Old stories are echoing in the minds of the warriors and some of the warriors think that history is trying to repeat itself. Gods have decided to finish things and get rid of all this fuss forever.
Book will not leave things in the middle like Gardens of the Moon and Memories of Ice. The decision time is finally at hands and war will end when one of the sides taking part in the war will get wiped out. Don’t doubt Michael Page’s narration by listening to the first three chapters of the novel, the narrator starts with complete seriousness after the fourth chapter and can make the listeners crazy.
