Speaker for the Dead is the second chapter in The Ender Saga. This science fiction and fantasy novel is written by Orson Scott Card. He is a legendary author of science fiction novels. He is the only writer to have won both the Nebula and Hugo awards in two consecutive years. The awards were given for his Ender’s Game novel which became a huge sensation among science fiction novel lovers. The Last Shadow is another superb title from Orson Scott Card which you should also check.
The audio narration of this novel is done by David Birney and Stefan Rudnicki. The narrators were not used effectively for the characters. There were too many inconsistencies and the issues weren’t really with their potential as performers.
Ender Wiggin in the repercussion of an appalling war just disappeared. A powerful voice also surfaced in the aftermath. It was of the Speaker for the Dead who narrated the tale of the Bugger War. After many years, another alien race was discovered by the Portuguese on the Lusitania planet. But, the ways of the aliens once again were quite frightening and weird. It was only up to the Speaker for the Dead who was the one with all the courage to confront the truth and the mystery.
The story of Speaker for the Dead is great and exactly what you expect from Orson Scott Card. The author infused this novel with some great intellect through the casting of his characters in religious, social, and cultural contexts. The only disappointment was the narration which was not up to the liking of the listeners. Still, the novel for the fans of Orson Scott Card is worth the read.
