Princeps’ Fury is an epic fantasy novel written by Jim Butcher. It is the book no. 5 of the Codex Alera series. Butcher has written some other fantastic books that are worth checking out, such as Fool Moon and Death Masks.
Kate Reading is a very capable narrator. She has narrated this book and will leave you utterly speechless. She doesn’t leave any room to complain. Overall, a very consistent performance.
The story starts with the forging of a weak alliance. This is between Tavi of Calderon and Alera’s oldest foes, the savage Canim. Tavi is recognized as Princeps Gaius Octavian, the heir to the crown. The alliance almost goes out the door when Tavi and his legions guide Canim to their lands, their worst nightmares are realized.
The book begins as Octavian is negotiating with Captain Demos to book a passage on the vessel called Silve. Meanwhile, in Alera, the feared Vord have entered Alera and also have learned how to furycraft. The Vord are enemies to both Alera and Canim. Octavian faces several storms as he heads to the Canim continent. He learns more and more about their civilization. He also learns their language as they get ready to disembark. What they don’t realize is the trouble that is waiting for them in the future. They think all will be well. Alas, The Vord have spent the last couple of years trying to lay waste to Canim and they aren’t stopping anytime soon. Events unfold and now the Alerans are forced to fight shoulder to shoulder, with no way to escape. They are cut from their ships. They have survived Alera’s foes for a thousand years. The thousand years are now over.
