Lock In (Narrated by Wil Wheaton) Audiobook
John Scalzi talks about a new kind of virus in this novel, the one which the author has named Haden’s syndrome. The story begins when this simple virus starts spreading in the world and for most people, it is like the flu which means that it can make you sick for a few hours after which you will be fine. However, there are rare and terrible impacts of this virus as well.
A few people get the extreme form of this virus and the virus causes “Lock in”. This means that the one suffering from the virus can see and observe things but he stops responding to them. He cannot respond to anything that is happening around him and starts living in that frozen condition.
There is no age or gender discrimination for this virus as it attacks everyone in the same manner. Many years later people got adjusted to this new kind of virus and life started coming back to normal. The virus kept on existing but people were used to seeing such cases. Chris Shane and Leslie Vann are the two FBI agents who get a unique case that gets linked to this “lock-in” issue. It appears that the killer is using patients with Haden’s syndrome for his evil deeds.
The patients are asked to commit the crime after which they once again go back to their lock-in form. In this way, there is no one to be blamed for the crime. Wil Wheaton has narrated the novel in his typical awesome style so it is a real joy to listen to this tale which becomes more dangerous later on. The Collapsing Empire and The Last Colony were not a race against time thing, here the clock is ticking for the two agents and they cannot afford to lose.
