Home Deus is a book on human history. It is part of the Sapiens series which is penned by Yuval Noah Harari. He is a prominent Israeli historian and writer of nonfiction books. Apart from Homo Deus, Sapiens is another outstanding book from the author, and probably his best one.
Derek Perkins did the honors of narrating this book. He is a brilliant performer and listening to him in this book is pure pleasure.
Humanity over the past century has done well to do the impossible and they have lived and survived reined in plague, famine, and brutality. This might well be a little hard to accept but Harari explained in his signature style that things like plague, famine, and war have transformed drastically into manageable challenges from uncontrollable and incomprehensible forces of nature. For the very first time in human history, a lot more people died after eating so much than from eating too less. A lot more people die because of old age than from different types of infectious diseases.
On top of that, more people committed suicide than they were killed by terrorists, soldiers, and criminals. An average American is a thousand times more like to die from eating loads of Mcdonald’s than to be killed by Al Qaeda.
So what would replace plague, famine, and war right at the top spot of the human agenda? What destinies would we all set for ourselves being the self-made type of gods of Earth?
Home Deus is a prescient, highly entertaining, and quite expansive book. You will be impressed with so much of the refreshing wisdom that this book has got to offer.
