Flowers for Algernon is a science fiction and fantasy novel. It is written by Daniel Keyes. He was an American writer and Flowers for Algernon is the most popular novel he was honored with the Author Emeritus award which was given to him in 2000 by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Science fiction fans remember Daniel Keyes through his great literary work where the subject title holds a very special place.
The audio narration of the subject novel is done by Jeff Woodman. It was a phenomenal performance given here. The narrator beautifully moved back and forth along with spot-on dialect and cadence. He was able to bring the due emotions of the characters so that the listeners were able to feel the connection with them through Woodman’s soulful voice. Charlie Gordon knew very well that he wasn’t bright at all. At the age of 32, he use to mop the floors of a bakery and would get just good enough money to get by. For three evenings every week, he use to study at an institution that was meant for mentally challenged people. But, all of this scenario was just about to change for good for Charlie.
As part of a challenging experiment, the doctors of that center were just about to perform surgery on the brain Charlie. With this surgery and some medication, they were hopeful that the intelligence of Charlie will be enhanced. They performed the same surgery on a mouse earlier which was successful. Soon, it would change Charlie’s world forever.
Flowers for Algernon won the Nebula Award in 1966 for the best novel of the year. As per The New York Times, this novel holds a story that is respectful, convincing, and touching.
