Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Anthony J. Melchiorri talk about the extinction of the human race twice in this novel. An evil force plans to destroy mankind at the start and it develops a virus that cannot be contained or controlled. Soon the virus starts turning the people into things which are named Variants.
The Variants are predators which turn humans into man-eater beasts. The human population declines very quickly in this way and this was exactly the thing which the evil force wanted or had in mind. Then some of the soldiers planned to fight back against all of this so that the remaining humans can be saved. Reed and Fitz, the leaders of the Delta Force gathered the rest of the soldiers who were interested in the mission and launched a massive attack on the enemy.
The Variants were forced to run away and the humans got the time to reconstruct what they lost in the war. Now the humans slowly start the rebuilding process but the danger is not over at all. The evil forces are back on the track and those who assume that the Variants are dying in the ruins and will never come back are mistaken heavily.
If the humans collapse this time then the whole reconstruction which they have done over last eight years would be over in a flash. R.C. Bray once again narrates the end of humanity in this new novel and this time there would be no time for reconstruction because nothing would be left at the end of this last big war.
