Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnson bring a new concept to the wars which take place in space. Usually, in such books, aliens just appear out of nowhere and the human race is forced to face a challenge for which they were never ready. Well, the two authors give us a picture in which the alien invasion is neglected by the humans because they had other local problems to deal with. The mining ship named El Cavador is present in the farthest corner of the solar system.
There are other mining ships present in the solar system but none of them is beyond Pluto-like except El Cavador. The ship has been there for a long time and the family which came in it from the earth is now growing in number. The members know that soon the ship would not be the proper place for them to live because things are getting congested in the mining ship. So they have started planning on their own because at this distance they don’t have a connection with the rest of the ships and earth. In space all of a sudden something strange is detected, there is a chance that it could be a meteor but if it is not that then it could be an alien ship. [Earth Unaware AudioBook]
Members of El Cavador don’t pay attention to it because they think that instead of the alien invasion they should think about their settlement in the Kuiper Belt. This is the first blunder which Stefan Rudnicki, Emily Janice Card, Roxanne Hernandez, and Stephen Hoye narrate in the story. [Earth Unaware AudioBook]
The alien invasion is not given importance and this allows the enemy to come closer. Humans were planning in Ender’s Game and Speaker for the Dead but here they just turn a deaf ear to the upcoming invasion. The aliens come with enough war material that they can blow up the entire solar system if they want.
