Time and situation can make any ordinary man a hero; it is a battle for survival that depicts the courage of a man. The same kind of issue appeared for Garion who was once a farm boy in his youth. Taking care of the everyday chores on the farm was what he liked about life and had no passion for leaving a great mark on the history of the world.
Then the Orb was stolen and this act brought the whole of the West under threat. The Orb was there to save the people of the land from the terror of the evil god Torak. Torak after the disappearance of the Orb became powerful and returned to the land to regain what he had lost once.
David Eddings changes the fate of Garion here quite abruptly as the boy comes to know that he is a sorcerer. The burden of finding and regaining the Orb thus lies on his shoulders thus he goes in search of the missing object in haste. Facing deadly things and dangerous enemies the hero finally gets to the Orb but bringing it back proves to be more difficult.
There are enemies in the way i.e the kind we observed in Pawn of Prophecy and Castle of Wizardry. They not only want the Orb but they also want to eradicate Garion. Garion here is linked to the princess as well so we observe him in a worried state for his survival. Cameron Beierle narrates with the tone of a lover when it comes to Garion’s character because he is somehow deeply engaged with the princess.
