Meredith Gentry is not only the private eye of L.A, she is a lot more than everybody around her does not know. Actually, she is the heir to the throne of the faerie kingdom and in order to get the throne and the crown, she must bear a child. There is another problem i.e the other person who thinks that he is the true heir to the throne is trying to get rid of Meredith.
Prince Cel is the cousin of Meredith and if she fails to bear a child then he can become the king but he too has to bear a child before Meredith. The two are in a race against time and there will be only one survivor who would be holding the crown in the end.
The job is not easy and more difficult than that is the issue of survival. Meredith has found the right kind of warrior for her mating and she thinks that her problem would be solved within no time but her problems just grow bigger and bigger. An ancient evil is approaching the world and it can destroy the human and the faerie world within no time. So the job is simple i.e Meredith has to keep herself alive, save the world, and then get the crown after bearing a child.
Laurell K. Hamilton is taking the story further very slowly because the audience is enjoying this slow progress just like it enjoyed Circus of the Damned and Death of a Darklord. Sometimes the voice of the narrator does not matter in a novel because people concentrate on the story but in emotional scenes, the voice really matters. The narrator Laurel Merlington has proved that a good voice can make a difference.
