The novel opens with the story of Nyx and a few chapters ahead it is the Jackal that takes over. Once there was a legendary prison in which the evil of the world was kept. When the raids started the track to that prison was completely lost. Thus no one knows about the place now and this makes Nyx’s journey more troublesome.
The girl is looking for her sister who was in prison and now there is no sign of her and the prison. Under the earth, Nyx starts her journey in search of the prison and as a guide, she meets a strange man named Jackal. Jackal wants to help Nyx because he can feel what it means to be imprisoned for such a long time. The Jackal was arrested without any reason in the past and then falsely he was condemned for the bad deeds which he never committed in his life.
Black Dagger Brotherhood is called very soon in the story as the things start to look curlier. One secret and then the other makes the character of the warden fishy. Nyx along with Jackal and Rhage move forward in investigation and they are bound to unlock a very big scam that has been buried under the earth for such a long time.
J.R. Ward does not introduce all the characters at once here rather the author keeps on adding new characters at regular intervals. The pattern of Lover Unveiled and Lover Awakened was not like that, perhaps the author wanted to experiment with the routine pattern a little. Jim Frangione narrates with the same accent and pitch till the last word and there is not a lot of variation observed in the voice.
