The passion of love, heartbreak, and then the impact of war, are the ingredients that Danielle Steel has added to the story. This is the tale that moves on for decades and goes back and forth in time too. Sarah Whitfield comes back to her old home with the rest of the family and it is her birthday party as she is turning seventy-five years of age. During this time she starts remembering things that took place in the 1930s.
Sarah got married at an early age but the marriage didn’t go well. After a year the marriage got shattered and her parents thought that a trip to Europe might heal her heart a little. At that young age, Sarah thought that she might not be able to find the right kind of love for her until the day she came across William who was the Duke of Whitfield.
The two got close within a short time and then they got married. An old French chateau was the place where they started their life and got blessed with their first child. Their second child was on the way when the war started and William went back to fight against the Nazis. During this time Sarah tried to keep herself and her baby boys safe from the enemy.
At the end of the war, happiness returned to the family and at this point in the story, Tim Curry used a special soothing voice in narration. The Whittiers and The Duchess ended quickly but not this one. After the reunion, the couple is blessed with two more children and they start a business that flourishes all around the globe. The author has described the personalities of the children in detail as well.
